At the end of the 1800s, Giuseppe Benanti, the grandfather of Dr. Giuseppe Benanti, started making wine on his father's old farm on the slopes of Mount Etna in Viagrande, Catania. In 1988, Giuseppe Benanti revived this family passion by studying the Etnean soils known for great vineyards. He also explored specific clones of native vines and modern winemaking techniques to recreate ancient flavors. After five years, they produced wines with unique tastes, preserving old flavors over time.
The Benanti 2021 Etna Rosso Contrada Monte Serra, from the Viagrande side of the volcano, shows a floral and fragrant side of Nerello Mascalese. It is full of red berries with hints of volcanic stone, mountain herbs, and dried lavender. The wine is straight and linear on the palate with fine and dusty tannins. It feels more open and ready to drink compared to the Contrada Cavaliere.
This wine is pale ruby red with light garnet tints. It has a spicy aroma with hints of red fruit. The taste is dry, medium to full-bodied, with balanced tannins and a persistent finish. It has aromas of fresh plums, peaches, nectarines, and lemon blossom with some caramel. It is full-bodied yet smooth, with fine tannins that spread across the palate. The finish includes notes of oranges and candied lemons.
